An open letter from Julian and Allyson

You know the feeling when a team gels and gets into that flow state…

Everyone communicates and collaborates easily, people are understood properly, even the unspoken parts. Ideas move quicker. People relax and become more themselves. Everyone comes away thinking: “That was easy. Why isn't it always like that?”

Allyson and I have both had those meetings. We don't think that it is based on luck or chemistry, and we believe that they could happen a lot more often than they do.

Between the two of us, we have lived and worked across 11 countries, built global teams of 100+ in at least five different sectors, learned four new languages, studied abroad, and sat on boards with investors and leaders from around the world.

And, yet, we still got it wrong.

In interactions with people from different countries, backgrounds and generations, we walked away confused about why the meeting felt off, the conversation didn't jive, the decision wasn't clear.

We leaned on our education, our experience, and our instincts to work through it, and it wasn't enough. We would walk into meetings and conversations genuinely wanting them to go well, but something would still be off, and we would usually find out weeks later.

Often that misunderstanding would be explained away. They weren't ready. It wasn't the right fit. But every explanation placed the problem inside the other person, because a person is the only thing you can actually see. What you can't see is that both of you were behaving reasonably by the rules you each grew up with and carry with you. Rules which, in that one moment, didn't match.

The misunderstanding only lasts a few seconds.
The cost lasts a lot longer.

A deal lost, trust weakened, an opportunity missed, a working relationship made harder than it needed to be. And this isn't a niche problem any more. The scale, immediacy, and frequency of working with people from somewhere else, or with different backgrounds, is at an all-time high and still climbing. Almost all of us are navigating it on instinct.

We think it doesn't need to be that way.

That's why we are building CultureFlow, a tool that turns all of this from instinct into something you can actually see, grounded in research rather than more guesswork.

At the centre of it is your Cultural Signature. Everyone has one. It is the particular mix of influences that shapes how you work: where you're from, your age, your gender, your sector, your experience, and more. Most of it is invisible to you and perfectly visible to everyone else.

Once you can see yours, and theirs, the friction stops being mysterious. It stops being about character. It becomes something you can name and work with, in the ordinary moments where work actually happens. The team meeting. The interview. The 1-to-1. The customer call. The prospecting email. The Tuesday video chat where both people are trying hard and both are slightly baffled.

This was never only about nationality, either. Two people from the same country with different backgrounds. The same background, different generations. Every pairing has a gap in it somewhere. We want CultureFlow to close that gap and make it easier for anyone to work with anyone, anywhere.

We also don't accept that this should stay with the people who happened to live abroad. That was our route, and it was expensive. Years of it, and a fair few relationships we handled badly along the way. It shouldn't be the only route.

Underneath all of it sits one belief.

Potential,
not presumption.

Meet people through what they're capable of, not through shorthand assumptions about who they are or where they are from. Imagine walking into your next meeting knowing how you both come across. Being prepared for the differences, and ready for what they make possible.

Your Cultural Signature is showing,
whether you realise it or not.

Find out what it's saying. In a couple of minutes and for free, build your own, then hold it up to ours and see where you'd click and where you'd clash.

Build your Cultural Signature

How we work

The values we build and hire by.

01

Respect and admire each other

We hire and work with people we genuinely respect and admire, for their character and their capability. Admiration is what keeps us curious about each other, open to each other's ideas, and willing to trust each other.

02

Trust

Trust builds stronger teams, drives individual performance, and improves decision making. It lets us work faster with fewer processes filling the gaps, and it is what moves ideas into reality, between people, across teams, and out into the world, more quickly and effectively.

03

Care deeply

We care about the quality of our work, how we do it, and how it affects the people and the world around us. That care starts between us, extends to our team and our customers, and reaches out into the communities we are a part of.

04

Bring out the best in others

We want to create the conditions for people to do their best work and become more themselves while doing it. That means seeing potential, encouraging growth, and helping people rise without empty cheerleading. It means making space for people to surprise us.

05

Be competitive

We are building something that matters and we want to be the best at it. We are ambitious without being arrogant. We push to improve every day without burning out. We want to win, without winning being the only point.

If you want the research, the engine and the people behind the science, that is a different page.
